Medical Day Care Unit (MDCU)
Overview
The Medical Day Care Unit (MDCU) allows patients to avoid a hospital admission during their course of treatment.
Examples of treatment given in the unit include chemotherapy, administration of blood products, as well as some diagnostic and treatment procedures.
All patients need to be referred by a physician who has admitting privileges at The Ottawa Hospital.
MDCU – General Campus
The MDCU at the General Campus is an outpatient treatment unit for patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, including those undergoing transplant or receiving cell therapy.
During your visit, you may receive treatments like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy or blood transfusions.
Our team of nurses and pharmacists is here to provide care, monitor symptoms and answer your questions to help you feel safe and supported.
Visitor guidelines for the MDCU
To protect patients with weakened immune systems:
- Each patient may bring one visitor.
- Visitors must be 16 or older and not have symptoms such as cough, runny nose, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
- Because this is an outpatient unit, patients must be able to walk to the bathroom on their own. If they can’t, a visitor who can assist must accompany them.
- Service animals are welcome in line with our Pet Visitation, Pet Therapy and Assistance Animals in the Hospital Standard Operating Procedure.
We look forward to providing safe, respectful and compassionate care during your visit.
