Neurosurgical Education and Outreach Network
Overview
Neurosurgical Education and Outreach Network (NEON) improves access to safe, timely neurosurgical care by supporting and strengthening nursing expertise at hospitals without neurosurgical services.
The Ottawa Hospital is a member of the Neurosurgical Education and Outreach Network (NEON), led by Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO). NEON supports the care of specialized neurosurgical patients at hospitals without onsite neurosurgical services and helps build neurosurgical nursing skills.
The network provides education and resources to hospitals across Ontario, including the Champlain region, and brings together nurse educators, outreach nurses and hospital administrators to support timely, equitable neurosurgical care and maintain provincial capacity.
Support provided by The Ottawa Hospital
The Ottawa Hospital has a neuroscience nurse educator and a clinical nurse specialist in neurosurgical outreach who support non‑neurosurgical hospitals in the Champlain Local Health Integration Network. Their work includes:
- Helping assess and strengthen neurosurgical nursing skills.
- Providing clinical expertise in neurosurgical care.
- Supporting patient repatriation to local hospitals when appropriate.
- Assisting with the development of neurosurgical nursing protocols and care practices.
