Champlain Infection Prevention and Control Hub

Champlain Infection Prevention and Control Hub

Part of a plan to keep Ontarians safe and to strengthen infection prevention and control practices in congregate living settings across Ontario.

Overview

Established in 2020 by the Ontario Ministry of Health (MOH) as part of a plan to keep Ontarians safe and to prepare for subsequent waves of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Hub Program aims to strengthen IPAC practices in congregate living settings (CLSs) across Ontario. This is achieved through collaboration with long-term care homes, retirement homes and CLSs and health system partners to find effective infection prevention and control solutions, promoting the safety of residents, staff, and visitors. IPAC Hubs are hosted by a public health unit or a hospital, with nearly 40 hubs operating across the province. The program is funded by the MOH, with IPAC Hubs in five regions focusing on CLSs.

The Champlain IPAC Hub is one of four in eastern Ontario and is hosted by The Ottawa Hospital (TOH). It is responsible for providing support to more than 400 CLSs within the Champlain region, which includes homes and agencies within the service areas of Ottawa Public Health (OPH), the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU), the Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU), and part of the South East Health Unit (SEHU, formerly Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit). The Champlain IPAC Hub recognizes the valuable work of IPAC leads, directors of care, leadership and staff of these CLSs, and is committed to building and maintaining relationships to coordinate the delivery of effective infection prevention and control solutions.

Team

The Champlain IPAC Hub team is comprised of experienced and skilled infection prevention and control professionals with backgrounds in acute and/or sub-acute care settings. While many current members hold the Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) credential, the goal is to ensure all members achieve certification. The team works with each home or agency to address direct requests for unique IPAC needs, as well as indirect requests received from partners on behalf of a CLS. They also proactively reach out to homes or agencies to address identified urgent or outbreak-related needs.
