Rehabilitation Engineering

Overview

Rehabilitation Engineering uses engineering, science and technology to improve the quality of life for people with physical disabilities.

This includes support in areas like mobility, communication, driving, independent living and recreation.

At The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (TOHRC), our team is authorized by Professional Engineers Ontario to provide professional engineering services to the public.

Who we serve

We support people with physical disabilities who have complex or unique equipment-related needs. This includes anyone who requires a custom device or a modification to existing equipment to improve independence and daily function.

Services

We offer a wide range of services, including:

  • Consultation, assessment and custom design of rehabilitation devices.
  • Modification, testing and fitting of existing equipment.
  • Repair and servicing of devices (only if they cannot be serviced locally elsewhere).
  • Loan program for accessible infant cribs (for TOHRC patients).
  • Support for health-care professionals with equipment-related questions.

Each solution is tailored to the individual’s needs, abilities and preferences. Patients are involved in every step — from setting goals to reviewing design options and attending fittings.

Team

Our team includes professional engineers and engineering technologists with expertise in electronics and mechanical design. We work closely with patients and their health-care providers — such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists, and physiatrists — to develop the best solutions.

Cost and coverage

Some services may involve fees. However, many patients qualify for provincial or other funding programs, which can cover a large portion of the cost. All custom work includes a written warranty.

Patients are responsible for any costs not covered by external funding. Funding options and cost details are discussed during the initial assessment.

Referrals and assessment

To access our services, a medical referral is required. Patients, family members or caregivers can contact us for general information. Health-care professionals can call to arrange a consultation.

During the first appointment, we assess:

  • The patient’s goals and abilities.
  • Compatibility with other equipment.
  • Aesthetic preferences and budget.

Additional appointments are often needed for fittings or adjustments. Patients should contact us if they have questions or need repairs after receiving their device.
