About us

As an integral component of The Ottawa Hospital’s strategic plan, the Environmental Sustainability Team will help guide TOH toward leadership in sustainable health care.

Employee engagement stands as a cornerstone of the environmental sustainability program, with an emphasis on empowering individuals to act as stewards, both within their workplace and community. We aim to improve the well-being of patients and the community, while positively impacting the health of our planet.

Our team organizes events to promote, educate and involve staff in advancing our strategic goals, objectives and ongoing initiatives. These collective efforts contribute to the delivery of exceptional service and world‐class care to every patient.

Environmental Sustainability Council

The Environmental Sustainability Council provides leadership, coordination and guidance of initiatives across TOH to promote sustainability and minimize the environmental impact of hospital operations, activities and services. Council members from departments across the organization provide expertise and diverse perspectives about environmental sustainability to ensure alignment with the strategic direction of the organization.

Made up of people from across the organization providing expertise and diverse perspectives, the council ensures alignment with the strategic plan in meeting our overall goals.

Clinical Product Sustainability Task Force

Chaired by the chief procurement officer, the task force works toward reducing waste and promoting planetary health through sustainable procurement practices, focusing specifically on clinical products throughout the organization.

Pharmacy Environmental Stewardship Committee

TOH’s Pharmacy Environmental Stewardship Committee, consisting of pharmacists, technicians and assistants, focuses on reducing emissions through education, operation, research, partnerships and medication use.

Pharmaceuticals have been reported to contribute as much as 25 per cent of the emissions emitted by the health-care sector in Canada.

Some initiatives from this committee include reducing unnecessary plastic and paper waste, incorporating planetary health education within the TOH residency half-day program, guest lecturing at the University of Ottawa and researching carbon emission savings related to inhalers.
