Family Practice

Overview

The Department of Family Practice at The Ottawa Hospital provides care in hospital settings and in the community, supporting patients through all stages of life.

The department includes family physicians who work as clinicians, teachers, researchers and administrators.

Many of our physicians work in inpatient units, outpatient clinics and specialized services across the hospital. Some also maintain private practices or serve as hospitalists at The Ottawa Hospital and other institutions.

The Department of Family Practice at The Ottawa Hospital was established in 1998 through the merger of family medicine departments at the Riverside, General, Civic and Grace hospitals.

Services

Inpatient care

Family physicians provide 24/7 care on the Clinical Teaching Units at the Civic and General campuses. These units are comprised of family medicine staff physicians, residents and medical students who manage both assigned and unassigned patients.

Transitional care

Our team supports patients in Transitional Care Units, helping those who are waiting for placement in community-based care.

Outpatient care

The Civic and Riverside campuses are home to the Academic Family Health Team. Here, family physicians work with residents, nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, social workers and other allied health professionals in a primary care environment that has recently become a Family Health Network.

Patients are seen by appointment during regular office hours as well as extended hours for urgent situations. Patients are also followed through the Civic Emergency Department and for inpatient admissions.

Maternal and newborn care

Family physicians in the Division of Maternal and Newborn Care provide low-risk obstetrics and newborn care at the Civic and General campuses.

Education and training

The department is closely affiliated with the University of Ottawa Department of Family Medicine and plays a key role in training residents and medical students. Physicians supervise learners in both hospital and community settings.
