Overview
The Ophthalmology Department at The Ottawa Hospital provides medical, surgical and emergency eye care to people in Ottawa and surrounding communities.
Our services also support patients from Eastern and Northern Ontario, Baffin Island and Western Quebec.
Our divisions
Eye care is provided through two world-class divisions:
The Eye Care Centre
The Eye Care centre at the Riverside Campus s one of the busiest outpatient eye surgery centres in Canada. Each year, we perform around 9,000 cataract surgeries and 2,000 other procedures, including retina, glaucoma, oculoplastic and trauma surgeries.
The University of Ottawa Eye Institute
The University of Ottawa Eye Institute at the General Campus offers advanced care, diagnosis, teaching and research. It combines community care with university-level expertise to support patients and train future eye care professionals.
Our role in the region
We help make eye care more accessible across Eastern Ontario by:
- Providing emergency eye care at hospitals that don’t have ophthalmology departments, like Queensway-Carleton Hospital.
- Running a Corneal Retrieval Program across hospitals, palliative care centres, CHEO, funeral homes and Ottawa Valley hospitals.
- Offering consultation clinics in communities such as Renfrew, Pembroke, Almonte, Winchester, Kemptville, Carleton Place, Barry’s Bay, Arnprior, Smiths Falls and Manotick.
- Supporting surgical care for patients from Baffin Island.
- Working closely with ophthalmologists at Montfort Hospital.
Teaching and research
As part of an Academic Health Science Centre, we train medical students, residents and fellows in ophthalmology. Our department is nationally and internationally recognized for its leadership in eye care, research and education.
