The Ottawa Hospital’s New Campus

Progress of the new campus

The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus is being built on a 50-acre site bordered by Carling Avenue, Preston Street, and Prince of Wales Drive, near Dow’s Lake in Ottawa.

It will be home to a new state-of-the-art hospital, an ambulatory care and research building, life sciences buildings, parking garage and an energy-efficient central utility plant.

This aerial video (from July 2025) shows progress on the parking garage and the location of where the main hospital will be built.

Latest updates

April 30, 2026

Upcoming work is required on the hospital parking garage that must be completed during hours when LRT trains are not running. Overnight shifts will begin this week and continue into early June. There is currently an active noise by-law exemption for the new campus site.

Work will involve running equipment and some hammering and drilling. Crews will make every possible effort to limit noise overnight and will complete as much as possible during regular construction hours. Overnight work will not include hoe-ramming.

Lights are required for safety during evening and night shifts but are being arranged to minimize shine into nearby buildings.

March 30, 2026

Construction continues as crews prepare for excavation of the hospital’s foundation.

The lower levels of the parking garage are planned to be open to the public this year. Construction will continue after the garage opens to complete the remaining floors.

Landscaping for the new campus, including the rooftop park and green roof on the parking garage, will be completed in phases, aligned with the overall site construction schedule.

February 9, 2026

Maple Drive will be closed from February 9 to 20 between the NCC Scenic Driveway and Winding Lane for utilities installation for The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus. All work will be done during daytime hours.

When conditions allow in the spring, the team will briefly close the road again to complete weather-sensitive roadwork.

The road closure and detour route will be clearly indicated and will follow a traffic control plan approved by the City. Every effort will be made to complete this work quickly and to minimize disruptions to pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic.

In addition, during the week of Feb. 9, please note that the construction team for the parking garage at The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus will be testing the building’s fire alarm system. The alarm may be heard during testing for a few minutes at a time throughout the week.

October 22, 2025

There is a lot of activity on the site of the new hospital. Construction has continued on the parking garage to support the new hospital. Pre-cast concrete panels have been installed to create the structure of the garage and construction teams are working to finish the interior. The garage, located near the corner of Preston Street and Carling Avenue., is planned to open in 2026.

In the area where the hospital itself will be built, work has begun to prepare the site for construction and complete civil works, including utilities installation and roadwork on and near the site. This work is planned to continue into 2026 while the design of the hospital is being finalized.

Work is also underway on roads and intersections around the site in areas where entrances to The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus will be located, with updates to the intersection of Carling Avenue and Champagne Avenue nearly complete. Work is ongoing on Preston Street. and Prince of Wales Drive and there will continue to be lane closures on Prince of Wales Drive through fall 2025. The construction team is working hard to complete this work as quickly as possible to minimize disruptions to pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic.

October 6, 2025

Prince of Wales Drive will be closed nightly between Preston Street and the Experimental Farm Pathway from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday, October 6, to Friday, October 10, for work on underground services. Overnight work is covered under a noise by-law exemption permit approved by the City of Ottawa.

The construction team has scheduled the loudest component of this work – hoe-ramming and drilling – to take place on Monday and Tuesday, between 6 and 10 p.m. Hoe-ramming will not occur overnight.

We apologize for any disruption. Our team will make every effort to complete this work as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimize impact to the community.

September 11, 2025

Work continues on roads and intersections around the site in areas where entrances to The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus will be located.

Work is nearing completion at Carling Avenue and Champagne Avenue and is progressing well on Prince of Wales Drive at Preston Street. There will continue to be lane closures on Prince of Wales Drive through fall 2025, which will be clearly indicated and will follow the traffic control plan approved by the City. Further overnight work on Prince of Wales will be required in coming weeks; we will share more information when it is available.

While site teams complete as much work as possible during regular construction hours, some work outside of regular construction hours will be required in the coming weeks to complete time-sensitive work. This is done in compliance with the City of Ottawa’s processes and regulations for noise by-law exemptions. There are currently two noise by-law exemptions active for work on the new campus site and work on surrounding intersections and roadways.

August 25, 2025

Work is progressing on roads and intersections around the site in areas where entrances to The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus will be located.

We coordinate closely with the City to ensure we are following regulations and guidelines for off-hours work, including an approved noise by-law exemption for hoe ramming, drilling and excavation. Our teams will complete as much work as possible during daytime hours to minimize disruption.

There will continue to be lane closures on Prince of Wales Drive through fall 2025. All changes and lane closures will continue to be clearly indicated and will follow the traffic control plan approved by the City. Every effort will be made to complete this work quickly and to minimize disruptions to pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic.

July 4, 2025

Construction is beginning on Preston Street and Prince of Wales Drive to prepare the area for entrances to the new campus.

Beginning July 8, left turns from eastbound Prince of Wales Drive to northbound Preston Street will be restricted for about a month. A detour will be signed.

This phase of construction will include lane closures on Prince of Wales Drive through fall 2025. At least one lane will remain open in each direction throughout construction.

All changes and lane closures will be clearly indicated and will follow the traffic control plan approved by the City. Every effort will be made to complete this work quickly and to minimize disruptions to pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic.

March 17, 2025

Work to connect the two sides of the parking garage above the LRT track continues with some overnight work required to complete this phase of construction. Teams working overnight will make every effort to limit noise.

Crews are busy on the location where the hospital will be built. Civil works, including the installation of utilities and services beneath the site roads connected to city streets are ongoing.

Road work that began in November 2024 is scheduled to resume at the intersection of Carling Avenue and Champagne Avenue, where one of the site entrances to The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus will be located.

January 31, 2025

Site preparation and utilities installation is continuing on the part of the site where the main hospital will be built. Trucks removing materials from the site are using approved trucking routes and have a staggered start time to avoid creating congestion near the site.

Work is underway to build connections over the top of the LRT trench on the site to link the two sides of the parking garage. This City-approved work is being completed overnight and on weekends when trains are not running. Crews will continue to make every effort to limit noise overnight. Lights are required for safety during evening and night shifts but are being arranged to minimize shine into nearby buildings.

November 19, 2024

Construction update: work is currently underway on the intersection at Carling Avenue and Champagne Avenue, where there will be an entrance into the new campus. Most of the updates are planned to be completed before the new year. Some seasonal work will continue into the spring of 2025.

Some work on the parking garage will require access to the Trillium Line LRT trench. Construction crews will endeavour to complete as much work as possible during regular hours. However, some City-approved overnight work will be required over the next few weeks. Crews will make every possible effort to limit noise overnight.

Planning and development

The Ottawa Hospital works closely with provincial, municipal and federal governments on planning the new campus. The Ontario Ministry of Health approves each stage of development, and the master site plan was approved by the City of Ottawa and the National Capital Commission in 2021. As plans are finalized for each stage of work on the site, the site plan is refined through approvals processes and feedback to ensure that the new hospital will meet the needs of our community, surrounding region and everyone we serve.

Since February 2024, The Ottawa Hospital, Infrastructure Ontario, The Ottawa Hospital Build Partners, and the Ontario Ministry of Health have been working through a Development Phase Agreement to collaboratively finalize designs, costs and construction schedule for the main hospital. This work will continue through 2025.

Construction

Construction on the parking garage to support the new campus started in the spring of 2023. By October 2024, the east side of the parking garage near Preston Street and Prince of Wales Drive was in place. Construction on the west side of the garage began in November 2024 and is ongoing while crews also work to connect the two sides as a single structure over the top of the LRT track.

Civil works, including the installation of utilities and services beneath the site roads connected to city streets, are ongoing.

Throughout the project, The Ottawa Hospital is working closely with arborists to preserve as many trees as possible. Because some trees will have to be removed due to construction, a tree conservation plan was developed with input from arborists and in consultation with the City of Ottawa and the National Capital Commission, and with The Ottawa Hospital's master site plan approved by the City of Ottawa.
