Overview
The Placenta Health Clinic at The Ottawa Hospital provides care for pregnant individuals at risk of placenta-mediated diseases.
These conditions can affect the health of both the mother and the baby and require careful monitoring and management. The clinic is staffed by a multidisciplinary team and operates mostly as a consultation service.
Placenta-mediated diseases
The placenta delivers nutrients and oxygen to the baby during pregnancy. If the placenta does not develop or function properly, it can lead to serious complications. Common placenta-mediated diseases include pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction. Identifying those at risk allows for prevention and early intervention. When a condition is already present, close monitoring and care are essential to improve outcomes.
