Managing Weight Expectations

The Managing Weight Expectations course is a free, four-week online group course facilitated by a registered dietitian. 

It provides participants with a better understanding of why the body may gain weight and for some people, why it can be so difficult to keep it off long-term. Most importantly, the course provides an overview of treatment options and a new way of looking at our weight, health and expectations.


Course outline

Part 1: Factors affecting our weight

  • Did you know that weight bias and stigma can impact our weight?
  • Is body mass index (BMI) out of date?​
  • Do we really understand the term “obesity”?​
  • Does weight loss equal health? 

Part 2: Hormones affecting weight and appetite

  • What is body weight set point and can it be changed?
  • Does our brain really control our weight?
  • How does losing or gaining weight affect our hormones?
  • Why do we have food cravings?
  • How does stress impact our weight and appetite? 

Part 3: Gut bacteria: Is your weight “bugging” you?

  • What are gut bacteria (microbiota)?
  • How does it affect our health and weight​?
  • Can anything improve gut bacteria? 

Part 4: life-long management

  • Can we still lose weight long-term?
  • What can we do that’s in our control?
  • What should we expect life-long?
  • How can we shift our expectations to achieve our values?
