Obstetrics, Gynecology and Newborn Care

Congratulations on your multiple pregnancy.

Expecting multiples is likely both exciting and daunting. At the front end of the pregnancy, many factors will influence maternal and fetal outcomes, the frequency of your medical appointments, what investigations you will require and even where and when you will deliver your babies. These considerations include how many babies are expected (twins, triplets, more), and what type of multiple pregnancy you are carrying.

There are also logistical issues in bringing home more than one baby at a time. After delivery, you may need special resources and equipment, such as special cribs, strollers, car seats, as well as extra helpers to feed and care for multiple babies.

Two newborn babies lie side by side, wrapped in soft white blankets. Their faces are slightly out of focus, with their tiny feet prominently shown in the foreground.

Individualized care for you and your babies

During pregnancy, many factors will affect your care. These include how many babies you are carrying and the type of multiple pregnancy—such as whether your twins share a placenta (monochorionic) or have separate placentas (dichorionic). These details will influence how often you see your care team, what tests you need and when and where you will deliver. If you have specific questions, please ask your health-care provider
